HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Honolulu police arrested 62-year-old Kathleen Caneda for allegedly embezzling $52,961.08 from the Hawaii Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Caneda worked as an Accounts Payable Clerk for the Red Cross. The theft allegedly occurred from July 9, 2004 to January 5, 2012.

"The Hawaii Red Cross recently discovered an accounting irregularity which indicated some funds were missing from chapter accounts," said Coralie Chun Matayoshi, CEO of the Hawaii Red Cross. "The chapter turned the matter over to the Honolulu Police Department who began an investigation into the missing funds."

Honolulu police say Caneda surrendered to police Thursday afternoon. She was released pending investigation.

"The Red Cross has zero tolerance for fraud, waste and abuse, and is committed to being good stewards of donor dollars," said Matayoshi.
