PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) - The commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet says the Navy will be sending its most advanced vessels and aircraft to the Asia-Pacific region as it builds up its presence by assigning most of its fleet there.

Adm. Cecil Haney told The Associated Press on Monday that the Navy is rotating through, deploying, and basing its newest equipment in the Pacific.

He cited Littoral Combat Ships as an example. They can operate in shallow waters and will be deployed to Singapore. He also pointed to the EA/18G jet. It can jam enemy air defenses and break the sound barrier.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said earlier this month that the Navy will deploy 60 percent of its fleet to the Pacific by 2020.

Haney says the move is about capabilities as well as numbers.
