WAIALUA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 12-year-old girl was critically injured Monday morning after a rock fell and struck her on the head during a hike.
It happened around 11 a.m. near YMCA's Camp Erdman in Waialua.
Honolulu Fire Capt. Terry Seelig says the girl was a part of a group of children who were hiking to a rock climbing area.
That area is described as being on the Kaena point side of Camp Erdman and is part of the mountain side, not a manufactured wall.
Seelig estimates that the rock weighs around 25 pounds.
The girl was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, however other children in the group were wearing helmets.

A YMCA summer camp participant was injured at Camp Erdman while participating in a scheduled activity. We do not have all the details confirmed at this time, nor can we release the participant's name or age due to confidentiality policies regarding a minor. We are in contact with the family and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
