Wahiawa family mourns loss of man who walked into traffic

Wahiawa resident Friter Ham says he is still mourning the loss of his nephew after a tragic set of events took Nickson Manas's life.

Ham says a disagreement between his nephew and girlfriend led the two out to Wilikina drive late Saturday night. "He was trying to cross the freeway back and forth from one side to the other." Ham said.

Nickson's girlfriend had followed him trying to get a hold of him. "She jumped on him and tried to hold onto his leg and at that time the vehicle just came up and hit them." said Ham.

Witnesses at the scene said what they saw, was shocking. "(He) just jumped right in front of the car." Lehua Seumanutafa told Hawaii News Now.

Police say Manas was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital where he later died.

The driver of the car was uninjured and according to police was not speeding nor was he under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Ham says Manas' unlikely actions were unfortunately a result of alcoholic influence which led to the tragic consequence. "I may say that, I think he was attempting suicide."

Just blocks from the crash site, Manas' relatives gathered in Friter Ham's home, sharing their memories. Ham expressed their emotions, "Since we love him very much, we liked him to stay with us forever as he is a really nice person and when this happened to him, it's a very sad thing that happened to us."

Manas' twenty-eight year old girlfriend remains in critical condition at Queen's Medical Center.
