Man dies after he walks into traffic, gets hit by vehicle in Wahiawa

A Wahiawa man was killed late Saturday night after witnesses said he walked into traffic and was struck by a car. His girlfriend was critically hurt after also being hit by the vehicle.

Lehua Seumanutafa couldn't sleep last night. She went to church early Sunday morning, still haunted by the images of what took place in front of her home.

"He literally jumped in front of the vehicle knowing that his wife was holding him, and him and his wife just went up in the air," said Seumanutafa.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office identified the man as Nickson Nanas. Witnesses said the 31-year-old man was arguing with the woman and then walked right into traffic.

"He was actually walking into the oncoming cars. On the opposite side, the driver was going home from work and he just jumped in front of the car," Seumanutafa said.

According to police, Manas was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he later died. His 28-year-old girlfriend was last reported in critical condition at the Queen's Medical Center.

Investigators said the driver of the car that struck the couple was unhurt. They also said he was not speeding, and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.

Manas lived with his family just a quarter mile from the crash site. More than a dozen relatives gathered there last night, according to witnesses.
