Hawaii Red Cross offers free swimming lessons

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hundreds of keiki hit the water Saturday at Magic Island.  That's where the American Red Cross held its annual free summer swim program.

According to the Red Cross, in Hawaii, 50 people drown, and nearly 150 people nearly drown every year, making it the second leading case of deadly unintentional injuries among children up to 17-years old.

"So many people, we're surrounded by water and a lot of people drown, and swimming is not an inherent capability. You have to learn, but once you learn, it's a lifelong thing that will save your life.  It's a good awareness piece because kids will just go and run in the water and they won't know what to do", said American Red Cross Hawaii State Chapter Chief Executive Officer Coralie Matayoshi.

The Red Cross is also holding a six-week summer swim class for adults on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
