HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Iolani Palace is looking for new docents! If you like to talk story, have an interest in Hawaiian history and enjoy interacting with visitors of all ages and from all nations, consider becoming a docent. Prior knowledge of Hawaiian history is not required.
Docent training is a three-part procedure.
1. Forty hours of Guardian Service (Providing aid to docents)
2. Completion of the Royal History Course
3. Completion of the Docent Training Course
After successful completion of all three parts, you will be a certified Iolani Palace Docent. Some docents have spread their training over several years.
A $20 fee includes instruction, a training manual, lectures, field trips, and other materials. The 2012 Summer Docent Training Course will begin on August 6th and continues thru October 15th. This class will meet on Mondays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Reading assignments and homework add to the time commitment trainees make during this nine-week course. Prospective students are invited to begin serving their guardian hours NOW.
