SECAUCUS, N.J. (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui's Branden Kaupe saw his big league dreams come to life Tuesday when he was selected in the 4th round of the Major League Baseball Draft.
The Baldwin High product was selected 140th overall by the New York Mets making him the highest selection from the Valley Isle since Kurt Suzuki (a fellow Baldwin Bear) was taken in the second round (no. 67 overall) by the Oakland Athletics in the 2004 draft.
"They (Mets) called my dad and asked me if I was ready," said Kaupe. "I looked at my dad and I told them yes. So, we were watching it live on the internet and hoping and praying that i'd get my name called and sure enough, I did."
Kaupe played shortstop for Baldwin and helped the Bears advance to the Division I state championship game before falling to Waiakea. He had signed to play college ball at Central Arizona next season.
