Police investigating fatal hit-and-run crash in Kaneohe

AHUIMANU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Relatives are heartbroken by the death of Matthew Fragas. The husband and father of two young boys was a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry. He died early Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle near his home in Ahuimanu.

Nearby resident Chinh Nguyen was startled by a loud crash right outside his home early Saturday morning.

"Big boom like that about five minutes, then I see the cops come," said Nguyen.

Police say at around 2:15am Matthew Fragas was crossing Kahekili highway near Ahuimanu place when he was hit by a vehicle traveling southbound on Kahekili highway. The driver fled the scene and so far, investigators haven't been able to find any witnesses.

Family members tell us that two young women found the 30-year-old lying in the middle of the road and tried to revive him by performing CPR but Fragas died at the scene. Relatives also say that last night they were all out enjoying themselves at Aloha Tower Marketplace. They told us that they had been drinking and when Fragas returned home, he and his wife got into an argument, so Fragas decided to walk it off.

Fragas was a 2000 graduate of Castle High School. He enlisted in the Air Force Reserves back in 2002 and had served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. If you have any information that can help call Crime Stoppers at 955-8300.
