Strong Winds Mark Start of Hurricane Season, Aiea Arson, Live at 50th State Fair

HURRICANE SEASON BEGINS

We saw a powerful example of Mother Nature's fury when strong gusts on Maui blew over this huge metal roof yesterday in Kihei, Maui. Keep in mind that Hurricane Season begins in the Central Pacific today and there are things you need to know in case severe weather hits Hawaii. We'll show you what every person should have in an emergency kit.

WEATHER NOW: BREEZY FRIDAY

Winds for higher elevations will remain strong and gusty through this afternoon. A wind advisory is posted with gusts over 50 mph possible. For most parts of the State, it will be partly sunny, but breezy. Dan forecasts wind speeds of 15-25 mph. A look ahead to our weekend forecast on Sunrise.

AIEA ARSON SUSPECT

The investigation continues into a house fire in Aiea, but we now know that police are searching for an arson suspect. A good samaritan helped pull a resident out of the burning Honomanu Street home. This morning, we've learned that police are looking for a 66 year old suspect.

LAKE WILSON ADVISORY

A warning about Lake Wilson this morning. Signs are up because of the likely release of partially disinfected sewage from The Wahiawa Waste Water Treatment plant. You should stay out of the water until the signs are removed.

REMEMBERING TJ

Funeral services will be held today for TJ Mamea. The brave 14 year old lost his fight with brain cancer last month on a family trip to American Samoa.

HOWARD HEADS TO NEW YORK

Hawaiian Airlines launches non-stop service to New York's JFK airport on Monday and Howard Dicus will be on the first flight. He'll have live reports on Sunrise next week.

LIVE AT THE 50TH STATE FAIR

The 50th State Fair is in full swing at Aloha Stadium so I volunteered to check out the attractions. Live on Sunrise, lion taming, acrobatics and I have a hunch there will be deep fried fair food too.

Hope you can join us!

Aloha,

Tannya Joaquin
