Telephone scam targets people in need of medical supplies

WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - By Erin Marx

The County of Maui Office on Aging is alerting residents about a telephone scam where the caller offers free medical supplies.

Two victims reported a caller claiming they were with the Maui County Office on Aging and said they qualified for free diabetes supplies. The caller then asked for the resident's age and Social Security number to confirm the order.

The Office on Aging says they only ask for that personal information to assess program eligibility when someone requests their services. Otherwise, they will never call someone for that information.

There are organizations who work with pharmaceutical companies and manufactures to provide free or low-cost medical supplies, including the Office on Aging, American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association.
