AUSTIN, Texas (HawaiiNewsNow) – University of Hawai‘i senior TeRina Keenan has qualified for the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after placing eighth in the discus prelims at the West Preliminary Round Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.
The senior from Auckland, New Zealand was among the top 12 finishers who will advance to the national championships in Des Moines, Iowa in two weeks after throwing 176-6 (53.81m). Arizona State's Anna Jelmini took top honors with a throw of 188-7 (57.49m).
The three-time Western Athletic Conference discus champion will participate in her first NCAA Championship and will become the school's third discus thrower to compete at nationals following in the footsteps of Novelle Murray, who took ninth overall in 2007 and Joan Gago, who placed 19th in 1983.
A Rainbow Wahine has now qualified for outdoor nationals six times in the last seven years.
High jumper Samantha Balentine tied for 23rd with a clearance of 5-7.25 (1.71m).
The meet concludes on Saturday with UH triple jumpers Madara Apine and Amanda Alvarez and hammer thrower Emma MacCorquodale in action.
