HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii arrivals by air are running 11 percent above year-ago levels so far this May, a greater improvement than seen in previous months.

According to daily postings by the state, May arrivals will top 600,000 this weekend. Arrivals from the mainland so far this month are up 7 percent and international arrivals are up 28 percent, including a 36 percent year-to-year increase from Japan.

Domestic traffic is up by 11,000 arrivals, or 5 percent, to Oahu; and by 6,000 to Maui, or 8 percent. Both the Big Island and Kauai have gotten almost 3,000 more arrivals so far this month than at the same point in May of last year. In each case that works out to an improvement of 14 percent.

Oahu hotels were 86 percent full last week. Maui and Kauai hotels were 68 percent, while Big Island hotel occupancy slipped to 51 percent, Hospitality Advisors LLC reported Friday.

Smith Travel Research said U.S. hotels as a whole were 66 percent full for the same 10 days to last Sunday.
