MESA, AZ – The UH baseball program's final WAC Tournament
will most likely be a short one. The
Fresno State Bulldogs beat Mike Trapasso's club in virtually every way
imaginable in the opening game, winning 8-2, and sending the Rainbows into the
loser's bracket.
The game started well for UH, with Collin Bennett scorching
an RBI triple in the bottom of the first inning. The ball would have been a home run in almost
any other park, but the massive pitching backdrop at HohoKam Stadium is in
play.
Jarrett Arakawa started for UH, and went through the first
four innings relatively easily, allowing only one run in the fourth. However in the fifth, he started showing
signs of tiring. After retiring the
first two batters of the frame, he allowed a solo home run to Patrick Hutcheson
that gave Fresno the 2-1 lead. Two
singles followed before Arakawa escaped damage and got out of the inning.
In the sixth, he walked leadoff batter Kenneth Wise, then
allowed a single to Austin Wynns before being relieved by David Longville.
Longville couldn't contain the Fresno bats.
A total of six runs plated in the inning, with two being
charged to Arakawa. The other four were
charged to Longville. FSU also executed
a triple steal in the inning.
Zach Swasey added a run for UH in the 7th, but it
was too much to overcome.
