Local Connection: Military Appreciation

By Rick Blangiardi

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It is the month of May and the time of the year we celebrate our appreciation for our military ohana - past and present, by designating may as military appreciation month.

Hawaii was the first state to honor the military throughout the month of may - 27 years ago.

It was initially started by the chamber of commerce of Hawaii in 1985 as a one-day observance of armed forces day. It then was extended into a week-long celebration and then, eventually, to a month of appreciation and remembrance.

Congress then officially designated the month of may nationally to honor, remember, and appreciate all military personnel who have served throughout our history, and all who now serve in uniform and their families; and especially those Americans who have given their lives in defense of our freedoms we all enjoy today.

A special "hats off" to Jim Tollefson, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and especially Charlie Ohta, vice president for military affairs at the chamber for their tireless efforts in helping to arrange a full slate of activities throughout the month of May to help all of us, not just say "thank you" but be able to show our respect for these very brave men and women.

So we very humbly and proudly say - mahalo, to all those on active duty in all branches of the services, the National Guard and reserves plus retirees, veterans and all of their families - well over 90 million Americans who have served bravely for more than 230 years of our nation's proud history.
