Rainbows Down Nevada 2-0

HONOLULU – Nevada pitcher Braden Shipley was sensational.  Jarrett Arakawa was better.

The Rainbows sophomore pitched 7 2/3 shutout innings, outdueling Shipley, who struck out 12 UH batters, as Hawaii won 2-0.

Arakawa started in place of the injured Matt Sisto.  He was making his first series-opening start.  It didn't show.  The Iolani graduate maneuvered through the game, commanded his pitches, and was never seriously threatened as the Rainbows improved to 9-7 in the WAC.  Nevada slipped to 10-6.

Shipley was virtually flawless as well.  However, Collin Bennett made solid contact twice on him, driving in the game's only runs.  In the first, Bennett sent a foul down the right field line.  Rightfielder Klein Brooks made the catch, ceding a run with Kaeo Aliviado tagging and scoring easily from third.

In the 4th inning, Bennett smoked a Shipley pitch down the leftfield line and over the fence for his 3rd home run of the season.  The solo shot closed the scoring on the game.

The Rainbows, jostling for position in the upcoming WAC Tournament, need to sweep Nevada in order to secure a tie for first and an opening round bye in the tournament.
