HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new study is looking into ways to provide better warnings for potentially deadly tsunamis.

Scientists at the University of Hawaii Manoa say commercial ships could be the key.

According to researchers, equipping the vessels with a GPS system would allow them to detect and measure the properties of a tsunami.

Scientists say the data will then help them to detect changes in the sea surface height, similar to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center predictions.
