A Big Island firefighter is up for a big honor, but this hero walks on four legs. Ka'imi and his handler Captain Robert Perreira have been nominated for the hero dog award in the law enforcement and arson dogs category.
Ka'imi is the state's only arson sniffing dog and has come a long way since being removed from an abusive home in California. His handler says Kaimi's skills in an arson investigation are invaluable.
"Were as an investigator it may take us days, hours to find that evidence and what he does that is more special is he pinpoints the exact location that we would take our samples from. So his nose will point exactly to the direction," said Capt. Perreira.
Ka'imi is one of 16 dogs nationwide up for this honor. The voting is done on-line and ends June 30th.
