New Mexico (HawaiiNewsNow) - A six-run first inning was too much of a deficit for the #11 Rainbow Wahine softball team to overcome against Brigham Young in a 6-4 loss at the Western Athletic Conference softball tournament Friday.
The Bows (44-6) loss, allows BYU (42-13) to advance to the winners bracket, while Hawaii will return to the field later in an elimination game against either Fresno State or Louisiana Tech.
Hawaii took a 3-zip lead in the top of the first inning when Jessica Iwata smacked a three-run home run off BYU's Hannah Howell.
However, UH starter Kaia Parnaby lasted just two-thirds of a inning after allowing six BYU runs in the bottom of the first. Stephanie Ricketts controlled the chaos the rest of the way, but aside from Iwata's bat (3-4, 2B, HR, 4 RBI), Hawaii couldn't take advantage of run scoring situations.
