Puna surfer dies after hitting jaw on surfboard

PUNA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - Big Island police say a surfer died Thursday afternoon after he fell and hit his jaw on his surfboard.

The surfer has been identified as 42-year-old Nathan Keliikuli of Keaau.

At 10 a.m., Puna Patrol officers responded to a report of a surfing accident at Pohoiki Beach also known as Isaac Hale Beach Park.

According to police, bystanders found Keliikuli unconscious; they attempted CPR until Fire Department rescue crews arrived.

Keliikuli was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition, he was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:13 a.m.

The case is classified as a coroner's inquest. Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
