HAUULA (HawaiiNewsNow) - An 18-year-old man is in critical condition following a moped crash in Hauula late Monday night.
According to Honolulu police, the incident happened at about 11:30 p.m.
Police say a woman in her early 40s was traveling toward Kahuku on Kamehameha Highway when she approached a man on a moped. As she passed the moped, the rider took off and attempted to overtake her near Kaipaupau Loop. He then crashed into the vehicle's front bumper and slammed into the windshield.
A neighbor identified the man as Ridge Alo. He was transported to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.
According to police, Alo was not wearing a helmet.
Police believe alcohol may be a factor in the crash.
Kamehameha Highway was shut down while police investigated. The highway was later reopened just before 3:30 a.m.
