HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A portion of temporary sewer pipe has surfaced in the Ala Wai Canal.

According to the Environmental Services Department, an air bubble lifted a section of the 5,000-foot long pipe, exposing 100 feet on the surface of the canal near the Hawaii Convention Center Saturday afternoon.

The City & County spokesperson says the pipe is not leaking and does not pose a health risk to the public.

Officials say the temporary black sewer pipe was installed following a main break on Beachwalk back in 2006.

According to the City & County, most of the sewage currently flows in the restored original main. Only a small amount of the sewage goes through the temporary bypass pipe.

City workers will attempt to resubmerge the pipe on Monday.

The work should not affect traffic along the Ala Wai Canal
