Two Oahu principals given special award at recognition ceremony

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two Oahu principals received high honors for their hard work Sunday morning.

Frank Fernandes of Kaimuki Middle School and Randiann Porras-Tang are Hawaii's principals of the year.

The award is given out by the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Both winners were recognized for achieving Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Act.

"It's exciting. It confirms we are doing things the right way. It's really my professional and personal pleasure to accept this recognition", said Fernandes.

"I think it's a reflection of our whole school. Everyone, the teachers, they work very hard and are effective. You can't separate Waialua from the community, so when we are recognized, it recognizes the community for their hard work. So it's awesome, it's daunting", said Porras-Tang.

Both honorees are now finalists for the title of National Principal of the Year.
