A man died after an apparent scuba diving accident in Kalapana Sunday morning.
Authorities said at least two people were diving from a boat when one man suddenly ran into trouble.
A dive boat took the man to the Pohoiki boat ramp.
A lifeguard in the area rushed to the scene, but says emergency crews could have responded sooner if they were better prepared.
"Everyone did the best they could, it's in god's hands now. We really need a jet ski program out here to be more efficient, that's the bottom line", said lifeguard Phillip Kissinger.
Rescue crews performed CPR on the unresponsive man, but could not save him.
Police are now investigating.
