HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A portion of a temporary sewer pipe has floated to the surface of the Ala Wai Canal.
According to the city Environmental Services Department, an air bubble lifted a section of the 5,000 foot-long pipe, exposing about 100 feet on the surface near the Hawaii Convention Center Saturday.
A spokesperson for the city said the pipe is not leaking and does not pose a health risk.
The temporary black sewer pipe was installed after a main break on Beachwalk in 2006. The city said most of the sewage now flows in the restored original main, with only a small amount going through the temporary bypass pipe.
Workers will try to resubmerge the pipe of Monday, the spokesperson said.
