KAWAIHAE, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -
Two men were killed after two vehicles collided near Kawaihae early Sunday morning.
According to authorities, the crash happened at the intersection of Highway 19 and Kawaihae Road in the South Kohala District shortly after 12:15 a.m.
Investigators said the collision involved a full-size Ford pickup truck driven by a man in his 40s, and a Honda Civic sedan with three men in their late teens to early 20s. Two of the men in the sedan were ejected. Police said one man died at the scene, while the other was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he died.
Police identified one of the fatalities as 19-year-old Kauahe Lactaoen of Waimea. The other victim has been identified as Rocky Pactol, 18, of Honokaa.
The drivers of both vehicles also were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment.
Police say the driver of the Honda Civic, who is in stable condition, was arrested on two counts of negligent homicide. The driver of the pickup truck was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Investigators say speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.
