Suspect sought in early-morning sex assault on UH student

Posted: Updated:

Authorities at the University of Hawaii at Manoa are looking for a suspect after an early-morning sex assault on a female student.

According to UH campus security officials, the assault was reported at 3:30 a.m. Thursday near Kanewai Park, next to the Center for Hawaiian Studies on Dole Street. Officials said the female student was at the park for a late-night party. As she left the gathering, authorities said she was grabbed from behind and sexually assaulted by an unknown male.

Campus Security sent out an alert and is handling the case because it involved a student, even though the assault happened off-campus.

"Kanewai Park is a public park," said UH security chief Wayne Ogino. "it's further down Dole Street, and it's a popular spot for students. They're wrapping up their classes. They're going to start final exams pretty soon. I think that's probably the reason for the gathering."

The attacker was apparently scared off by voices from others at or near the gathering. He fled in an unknown direction.

"The victim may have left the party, and was somewhere near the park, we don't know exactly where because I don't think she recalled the details, but anyway, it happened sometime after the party," Ogino said.

This assault follows three other sex assault incidents on or near the UH campus in March. "There are leads" in those cases, Ogino said. "As far as I know there haven't been any arrests yet. But those are open cases, so we'll continue to pursue it."

Meanwhile, anyone who was in the area of Kanewai Park or nearby who may have seen or heard anything is asked to call Campus Security at 956-6911.
