Three members of the Koa Puna motorcycle club were heading through Wahiawa on a recreational ride around 2:30 p.m. in Sunday. But just as the group approached Ohai Street on Kamehameha Highway, police say the operator of a 2010 Harley-Davidson sped forward and lost control of his motorcycle. He hit the back of a truck in front of him.
Police investigating the scene determined the motorcyclist had been traveling at a high rate of speed and was not wearing a helmet.
The motorcyclist, a 47-year-old Wahiawa man, was taken to the Queens Medical Center with head and internal injuries.
Manny Newman a fellow club member, said he has known the motorcyclist for a long time, and that his friend had just suffered a tragic loss just days ago.
"A real, real good guy who loved his family, actually he just buried his wife last week, she died of cancer, it's kind of a tragedy."
According to police, speed and alcohol are factors in the crash for the motorcyclist. They are also looking into other possible causes.
"What we are learning now is that there may have been a traffic incident just prior to this crash involving a motorcycle and a white compact vehicle." said Lt. Robert Towne of the Honolulu Police Department.
The driver of the white vehicle was interviewed at the Wahiawa substation but was not arrested.
This was the second motorcycle accident on Oahu on Sunday.
Around 4 a.m. Sunday a motorcycle carrying a 19-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman crashed into a car heading west on Moanalua Freeway.
Both riders suffered serious injuries.
And over in Waianae a man in his 40's was critically injured when his moped crashed into a car around 3 p.m. Sunday on Pa'akea Road.
Police blocked off the area for about an hour while they investigated.
