CHINATOWN (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle and the Hawaii Lions Club partnered up in Chinatown Saturday morning to re-start the "Safe Sidewalks Project".
The city put about $4 million in next year's budget for sidewalk improvements and construction, but partnering with volunteer groups helps take care of short-term repairs to damaged city sidewalks.
"There is a genuine spirit of volunteerism here in Honolulu and I think we saw that during APEC and this is just another example of that. I can't tell you how pleased we are to have that spirit and to have this opportunity, to have people do something that we wouldn't get around to and by them doing it, it makes our jobs easier too", said Mayor Peter Carlisle.
The city owns roughly 1,800 miles of sidewalks that have been damaged by tree roots and normal wear and tear.
