UH sand volleyball team wraps up pool play

GULF SHORES, Ala. – A pair of University of Hawai'i sand volleyball tandems wrapped up pool play on the first day of the inaugural AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships. The duos of Jane Croson-Ashley and Elizabeth Stoltzman-Emily Hartong each finished second in their respective pools with identical 1-2 records.

Croson-Lee garnered the No. 7 seed and will face No. 10 seed Sara Shaw and Geena Urango of USC in the round of 16 of Sunday's single-elimination tournament. Stotlzman-Hartong earned the No. 8 seed for will take on No. 9 Haleigh Hampton and Chelsea Cabrajac of Long Beach State. Sunday's action starts at 8 a.m.CT, with quarterfinals scheduled for 9 a.m. Both semifinals and the championship match will be held on center court, beginning at 11 a.m.

Pool play started off well for the Rainbow Wahine as Hartong and Stoltzman took down USC's top duo of Shaw and Urango. The pair, however, dropped its next two matches both in three-set fashion. UH lost a tough one as Jace Pardon-Jekaterina Stepanova of Florida State scored the last four points to take the third and decisive set 15-13. The pair were then upset by the duo of Dagnija Medina-Emily Strack of North Florida in another tight three-set match to conclude the day.

The results were similar for Croson and Lee. The pair defeated Emily Shelton and Kelly Kolich of the College of Charleston in straight sets to start pool play off, but would fall victim in a pair of close three-set losses. In the final match of the day Croson and Lee faced Florida State's top duo of Aurora Newgard and Brittany Tiegs in an epic battle. Croson and Lee had beaten the FSU pair twice already this season, including in the championship of the North Florida Invitational. This time, however, FSU took home an fiercely-contested match, 21-18, 28-30, 16-14. Newgard and Tiegs rallied from a 13-9 deficit in the final set, scoring seven of the match's final eight points.
