Maui Onion Challenge: Maui Onion Festival

(HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii will soon celebrate one of it's world renown crops, the Ku la Maui Onion at the 23rd Annual Maui Onion Festival on Saturday, May 5th! But starting Friday, April 27th, chefs at various Whalers Village restaurants and Kaanapali resorts will get a jump start on the fun, featuring a signature Kula Maui Onion entree or appetizer for customers, while their recipes go head to head with judges at the festival. Ramsay Wharton headed to Maui to see what's cooking...

(UPDATE) Congratulations to the six chef finalists selected during the 2012 Maui Onion Challenge at Tropica Restaurant at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa. They will cook off at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 5 at this year's 23rd Annual Maui Onion Festival.

Judges are: Carla Tracy, Maui News; Nadine Kam, Honolulu Star-Advertiser; Ayngelina Brogan, www.baconismagic.com; Cassandra Anderton, freelance food and travel writer from Vancouver, Canada.

As a reminder, ALL of the participating Ka'anapali chefs/restaurants listed below will feature their Maui Onion dishes to the public at their participating restaurants through May 6.

Plehu, an Italian Grill at The Westin Ka

Ka'anapali / Chef Chris Schobel: Thai scented salad gazpacho, Maui onion soup and pickled Maui onion, with Suring Goat Dairy Goat cheese sandwich. 129 points

Ka'anapali Beach Hotel / Chef Christopher Napoleon: Pan seared Opakapaka with onion dust and house spices, on caramelized onion gnocchi with asparagus tips, oyster mushrooms, Kula sweet corn and Maine lobster meat. Finished with butternut onion butter sauce and a touch of mixed onion marmalade. 126 points (TIE)

Cane & Taro / Chef Ivan Pahk: Pan Roasted Opakapaka fresh Mafalde pasta with Maui onion jus with local farm fresh veggies. 126 points (TIE)

6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Three-course dinner featuring the Maui Kula Onion, paired with beer. Tickets will be sold at Hula Grill, 808-667-6636

The event will feature TOP Hawaii Chefs from Maui and Oahu conducting cooking demonstration on stage at the Maui Onion Festival. They'll then be judged for the best use of the Kula Maui Onion. Featured Onion Festival Chefs on stage: Chefs D.K. Kodama, David Paul, James McDonald, Jojo Vasquez, Kevin Hanney, Russel Siu

Lots of onion rings will be served up, along with local produce, beer garden, Hawaii products, music and entertainment. Enter the keiki and adult onion eating contest. Enjoy the Special Whalers Village retail offers April 30 - May 5.
