Local Connection: Haleiwa Farmers Market

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hawaii Department of Transportation says it cheerfully supported the Haleiwa farmers market rent free for three years.

But we're now told that more than a year ago the state began to seek changes in the month-to-month permits it was issuing. Lawyers got involved on both sides, and it was the lawyers who raised the issue that led to the state basically issuing an eviction notice. The issue?

The market is held on land that the state still carries on its books as a road. It hasn't been a road for years, but bureaucrats never changed the paperwork.

This week, the department gave the farmers market two more weeks.

Two weeks to find a new location - from bureaucrats who had *years* to fix a simple paperwork issue and couldn't.

You can't make stuff like this up.

And who does it hurt? Dozens of farmers and vendors who made the market a tourist attraction and an economic engine for north shore residents.
