Local Connection: As the Economy Turns

By Rick Blangiardi

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -  A curious trend is emerging in the corporate earnings reports coming out lately.

Every company that owns a truck or a plane is complaining about its fuel bills. But actual sales of whatever they make, seem to be doing fairly well.

Chrysler is selling more cars.

Merck is selling more diabetes medicine.

Mattel is selling more Barbie dolls.

We're seeing this in Hawaii, where most retail chains report higher sales. Hotel occupancy has been way better than most winters.

Financial advisors are starting to tell people to position themselves for better times. Industrial real estate broker Mark Ambard was on our news, saying, look for land deals now, before both prices and interest rates go up.

As a consumer, you were wise to be cautious during the recession. But business owners always need to be prepared for the future, even when the future is good.

The future has a way of happening in the next instant.
