HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Dancers Unlimited LLC, Housing Project 360, and The Curators of Hip Hop, have joined forces to present the 3rd Annual National Dance Week Hawaii (NDW-Hawaii), April 22-29, 2012. The week will consist of lectures, guest teachers from the mainland, master dance classes, and a variety of workshops.
A 100% volunteer-run festival with support from sponsors Yelp Hawaii, Showtime DJs & Entertainment, and the U.H. Manoa Dance Department, NDW-Hawaii will showcase professional dance performances, as well as provide education opportunities to dancers of every level, from the beginner to the most advanced student. Twenty percent of proceeds from selected workshops and all performances will be donated to Aloha United Way (non-profit partners in the past have included Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation and The ARTSmith).
Hawaii has no shortage of talent, especially within the dance community. Most recently, local dancers including Mark Kanemura and Kupono Aweau, have gone on to take their love of dance and morphed it into professional careers (Kanemura is on tour with Lady Gaga, while Aweau will be on tour with Madonna, respectively). Says, Dancers Unlimited's Linda Kuo, "By collectively presenting NDW-Hawaii, we hope to nurture the creativity of Hawaii dancers through a week of dance classes and performances, and show them what type of opportunities can come out of hard work and professional training." Kuo continues, "Ultimately, our goal is to present Hawaii as a dance festival destination for companies and artists from Hawaii, the U.S., and abroad."
