Rail Construction Starts, Wet Commute, Rock Removal

RAIL CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

Drivers take note, As the debate over rail heats up in court, construction actually starts today. Drilling for support columns will begin near Farrington Highway in Kapolei today. We'll keep you updated on any effects to your commute on Sunrise.

RAINY RIDE TO WORK

Watch for showers on the road this morning. Dan says it should be a wet commute with skies clearing by lunchtime in most places. But, the breezy conditions will stick around through tomorrow. Follow the forecast with our Interactive Radar. @

ROCK REMOVAL

Work is also happening today to remove at least six unstable rocks from a Kalihi Valley hillside. It's the area where boulders crashed into three homes earlier this month. The State land board authorized spending up to 150-thousand dollars to remove loose boulders above the homes.

WAIKIKI SAND RESTORATION

The final phase of the 3 month project to replenish sand in Waikiki gets underway today. Sand hauling hours will be extended 7am to 3pm today, tomorrow and Wednesday to focus on the stretch between the Duke Kahanamoku statue and the Sheraton Waikiki.

STABBING SUSPECT SEARCH

Honolulu Police are looking for a suspect in his 50's after a stabbing outside Mayor Wright homes. A 34-year old man remains in critical condition this morning after being stabbed yesterday. It's the second stabbing at Mayor Wright in the past week. The suspect in the first case is scheduled to appear in court today.

ENGINE TROUBLE FOR KONA PLANE

Overnight, an American Airlines flight from Kona experienced engine trouble about an hour out from Los Angeles. Emergency crews were there when the Boeing 757 touched down at LAX without incident. Mechanics are now examining the source of the problem.

GOLDEN FORECAST

Reports from Japan Airlines are a good sign for Golden Week less than 2 weeks from now. Hawaii bookings are up about seven percent. Howard will have details on Sunrise.
