Injured hiker rescued from Sacred Falls, then cited

HAUULA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A woman was airlifted out of the area near Sacred Falls with a possible broken leg, and then was cited for hiking in the area, which has been off-limits since a fatal rockfall on Mother's Day in 1999.

Fire rescue crews responded to the call shortly after noon Saturday. Authorities say the woman in her 20s was located about 500 feet from the base of the falls. She was airlifted out by the Honolulu Fire Department's Air 1 helicopter because she was unable to walk.

According to the fire department, the woman was hiking with three other people. A spokesperson for the Department of Land and Natural Resources said officers cited a total of four males and three females for entering the closed area on Saturday. The violation is a petty misdemeanor. They will need to go to court and pay a fine.

The area has been closed to the public since May 9, 1999, when a rockfall killed eight people and injured dozens more.
