HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - A bicyclist is dead following a vehicle crash in Hilo Wednesday morning.

According to police, the incident happened at about 7:30 a.m. near the intersection of Kinoole and Ohea Streets.

Officials say 20-year-old Brody Winslow of North Carolina was knocked off his bike when a 2005 Toyota Tacoma struck him.

The driver of the truck, 40-year-old Alison Taylor of Volcano, then struck a utility pole and fled the scene. Taylor was later stopped by an off-duty police officer at Palai Street.

Winslow was transported to the Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

He was a former student at Hawaii Community College.

Taylor was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide, accident involving death or serious injury, driving under the influence of intoxicants, failure to render aid and driving with a suspended license.

Taylor is being held at the Hilo police cellblock while Traffic Enforcement Unit officers continue the investigation.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 10th fatality this year compared to seven at this time in 2011.
