Big Island man dies following Mountain View crash

MOUNTAIN VIEW (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 28-year-old man is dead following an early morning crash on the Big Island.

According to police, the two-vehicle crash happened on Volcano Highway (Route 11) and South Kulani Road just before 1:30 a.m. Friday.

When fire officials arrived to the scene, they found a police officer performing chest compressions on the victim, who was trapped in a small pick-up truck. The vehicle was found d in the middle of the road with significant front-end damage.

The victim then extricated and transported to the Hilo hospital where he was pronounced DOA.

Officers later found the second vehicle involved in the crash farther up the highway. The driver of the second vehicle was not injured.

Roads were shut down in the area, but were reopened at about 4:30 a.m.

The police department's traffic division is handling the investigation.

The victim's identity has not been released, pending notification of his next of kin.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.
