Arson blamed for fire that killed 12 dogs on Maui

WAILUKU, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui Police say 12 dogs including five puppies were killed when their kennel was intentionally set on fire.

Police say on Sunday officers responded to a fire in an open field located mauka of Honoapiilani Highway on the Kihei side of Kuikahi Drive.

Upon arrival police and fire found a storage shed attached to a dog kennel engulfed in flames.  The fire was quickly extinguished.

Initial investigation by police and fire investigators indicate that the fire started within the storage shed. The shed had no power source. The cause of the fire is under investigation, however, arson is suspected.

The dogs were used for both hunting and herding.

Damages to the shed and contents are estimated at about $14,000.
