Semi-truck flips on H-1, traffic backed up

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A semi-truck overturned on the H-1 Freeway Monday afternoon spilling tons of hot asphalt onto the roadway, closing three westbound lanes.

The accident happened around 2 p.m. near the Aiea Heights and the Kaamilo overpass. All lanes were reopened around 5:30 p.m.

Police tell Hawaii News Now that the driver reported a problem with the rear tires when the truck flipped. The semi was carrying about 20 tons of hot asphalt which spilled onto the roadway.

The driver was taken to the hospital in serious condition. No one else was injured in the crash.
The company that owns the truck, Road Builders, brought a front end loader to scene to scrape up asphalt, they also scrubed the road surface with machine to remove loose bits of asphalt.
