Suspect in deadly Makaha hit-and-run appearing in court

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man suspected of plowing into a family while driving under the influence of alcohol in Makaha is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Investigators say 44-year-old Potasi Uta, Jr. Was behind the wheel of a Honda when it slammed into bus stop, killing three-year-old Ashton Brown.

The boy's sister was critically injured and other family members were also hurt.

As of Monday, the sister is reportedly in stable condition.

Hospital officials would not release any further details, however, last week, Hawaii News Now was told she may lose one or both of her legs.

Police say Uta fled the scene of the crash, but was later arrested.

He's charged with first-degree negligent homicide, first-degree negligent injury and failure to render aid.

Just nine days before the crash, he was released from a work furlough program at OCCC.

Uta has a lengthy wrap sheet including another drunk driving arrested, contempt of court and auto theft.

In 2002, he was arrested for burglary and later sentenced to 10 years in prison.
