Living Lei Chic: Asagi Hatchery

(HawaiiNewsNow) - Some days you just want to hang with your peeps or just some really cool chicks.  That's why, for decades, people have flocked to Asagi Hatchery in Kalihi - Hawaii's only remaining commercial hatchery.

Started in 1935 by Mikio "Mike" Asagi, it's now in the hands of his grandchildren. The hatchery still provides chicks for people who want to have their own source for fresh eggs. But HONOLULU Magazine editor Martha Cheng picked it as a Best of HONOLULU for its expansion into a supply store for all kinds of urban farming including dwarf fruit trees and herb plants.

Owner Maxie Asagi says chickens are some of the easiest animals to raise as they are very independent and don't need a lot of room to live (about a four-by-four foot space per chicken).  Some buy them as pets or, since they eat everything from centipedes to cockroaches, as natural pest control. The hatchery does keep the birds social tendancies in mind and only sells them in pairs.
