DENVER – University of Hawai‘i men's tennis player Jonathan Brooklyn has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the week of March 19-25.
Brooklyn went undefeated in singles and doubles play last weekend. On Thursday, he helped Hawai'i (3-9, 2-1 WAC) earn a conference win against New Mexico State, defeating Matej Stakne in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-4. He, along with partner Dymtro Kovalyov, defeated Stakne and Luis Ramirez, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.
Brooklyn followed that up with three wins over ranked opponents in UH's next two dual matches. Against No. 18 Fresno State, Brooklyn defeated Remi Boutillier, the 22nd-ranked player in the country, 4-6, 7-5, (11-9). Against No. 27 Tulsa, he defeated Japie De Klerk, the 68th-ranked player in the nation, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8). Teamed with Kovalyov, he added an 8-5 doubles win over Boutillier and Francis Alcantara, who were ranked No. 65 in the nation.
The Rainbow Warriors play their finale home match on Friday, Mar. 30, taking on UC Davis at 11:30 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex. UH will host a match for the first time in nearly a month.
