Volunteers help clean up Keauhou Bay

KEAUHOU (HawaiiNewsNow) - To mark the tsunami's wide-reaching impact in Hawaii one year later, nearly 200 volunteers on the Big Island helped clean up one of the hardest hit areas Saturday morning in Keauhou Bay.

Last year, the tsunami sent water levels in the Kailua-Kona harbor surging, destroying buildings and homes.

Some businesses and landowners are still struggling.

"The buildings that are next to us here, the Fairwinds, took a significant amount of damage during the tsunami, the Yacht Club structure has not reopened since the tsunami, and the Sea Paradise has not been reopened yet. We've come a long way in a short amount of time, but there's a lot more work to be done", said Kamehameha Investment Corporation spokesperson Kyle Chock.

Organizers say the clean-up will become an annual event.
