HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Honolulu and Kauai Counties, but has canceled the watch for the island of Maui.
A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to Honolulu, Lihue and Kahului.
Radar indicated a very strong thunderstorm developing near Kaneohe, particularly by the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base. The NWS says the storm could produce heavy rain, frequent lightning, gusty winds and hail up to the size of nickels.
Residents in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.
According to the NWS, severe thunderstorms produce winds of 58 miles per hour or higher. There is also a possibility of hail the size of golf balls.
The severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 10 a.m.
