Electrical generators trip offline, Oahu lights blink

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Power was interrupted on Oahu at about 9:25 p.m. when three generating units tripped offline.

According to Hawaiian Electric Company spokesman Darren Pai, HECO immediately brought backup generators into service. However, power was interrupted briefly as those generators were brought online.

Several residents reported brief electricity interruptions, but some areas were without power for several minutes or more. A University of Hawaii baseball game was interrupted for a few minutes when the lights went out at Les Murakami Stadium.

Pai said that crews had most of the power back on by 10:45 p.m., but crews were still working to restore any areas still without electricity.

Pai said the loss of electricity was not caused by a blown transformer.
