HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed a disaster proclamation for the islands of Kauai and Oahu as torrential rains, high winds and flooding continue Tuesday.

Residents on both islands have experienced extreme weather conditions, resulting in property damages and losses.

Forecasters say these conditions will continue through Tuesday.

Abercrombie's proclamation states the following:

"This occurrence of a severe, sudden, and extraordinary event has caused extensive damages, losses, and suffering of such character and magnitude to affect the health, welfare, and living conditions of a substantial number of persons, thereby affecting the economy of the State, which is expected to be of such nature as to warrant rehabilitative assistance from the State."

On Monday, the governor signed a disaster proclamation authorizing the Department of Transportation to begin emergency repairs on Kauai's Kuhio Highway after it partially collapsed near Kilauea Town.
