Hawaii Pitcher Ricketts Earns WAC Honors

DENVER (HawaiiNewsNow)—University of Hawaii's Stephanie Ricketts was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, for Feb. 27-March 4. This is the second honor this season for the senior and ninth overall in her career.
 
Ricketts, a senior from San Jose, Calif., went 3-0 in the Bank of Hawaii Invitational with a 1.40 ERA and 27 strikeouts. On Saturday night in a 2-1 win over No. 20 Florida State, Ricketts retired the first 13 batters and faced just two batters over the minimum, giving up one run on two hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. She also became the all-time winningest pitcher in Hawaii history with the victory, bettering Kelly Gentle's former record of 82.

In Sunday's championship game, she fired a one-hit shutout with a season-high 11 strikeouts. For the week, Ricketts held opponents to a .106 batting average and she was named the Bank of Hawaii Invitational's Most Valuable Pitcher. She is now 10-0 with 10 complete-game wins and five shut-outs this season. She has 84 career victories with 96 complete games and 28 shutouts overall. This season, Ricketts has tossed 64.0 innings giving up nine runs with 18 walks and 78 strike outs while holding opponents to a .138 average.
 
The 22-ranked Rainbow Wahine play a single game on Tuesday night against No. 20 Florida State before beginning the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament on Thursday, March 8 and runs through Sunday, March 11. Participating in the tourney are Marist, Radford, Robert Morris, and Southern Illinois.
