LIHUE (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state Department of Transportation (DOT) advises Kauai motorists that Kuhio Highway near Kilauea has been closed due to a collapsed drainage culvert beneath the roadway surface.
Vehicles are now being rerouted onto Kolo Road and Pili Road to bypass the affected area.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution through the residential area and to follow all posted traffic signage.
A 15-foot-diameter culvert running beneath the highway near Mile Post 22.5, approximately 1,000-feet east of the Pili Road intersection, suffered a partial collapse during heavy rains over the past two weekends. DOT was able to keep traffic flowing by shifting vehicles inland but another section of the culvert collapsed this morning, forcing the highway closure.
State highway personnel completed site inspections last week and the design of a repair project is expected to be completed later this week. Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-to-late March.
