Power on Maui restored after afternoon outage

MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui Electric Company says power has been restored to all of the approximately 20,000 customers who lost power around 1:37 p.m.

MECO was able to bring up additional generation at the power plant to be able to restore power to the remaining areas.

In a news release, MECO said "A malfunction on the controls of two large generating units at Maalaea Power Plant caused the units to trip offline resulting in the load shed and subsequent loss of power earlier today. Maui Electric thanks the public for their patience and understanding."
